What is SHAPES-PEI?
SHAPES-PEI is a data collection and knowledge exchange system used to monitor youth health behaviours in Prince Edward Island. SHAPES-PEI uses school-based surveys to ask students questions about physical activity, healthy eating, mental fitness, and tobacco, alcohol, and drug use.
SHAPES-PEI was funded by the PEI Department of Education Early Learning and Culture (DEELC) and the PEI Department of Health and Wellness (DoHW). Planning for SHAPES-PEI first occurred in 2007 - 2008 as a response to the need for a more coordinated approach to school health data collection at the individual school level, as well as provincially.
The implementation of SHAPES-PEI was made possible by leveraging funds from the national implementation of Health Canada's Canadian Student Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey (formerly the Youth Smoking Survey), of which Prince Edward Island has been involved since 2004.
SHAPES-PEI supported school communities in promoting healthy living through the use of local data. School Health Profiles summarized the results of the survey at the school, school board, and provincial level. These results helped schools, communities, and government take action to support and improve the health of young people in PEI. Data was aggregated at various levels to identify trends for policy and planning, and develop strategies for intervention.
Why a Provincial, School-Based Survey?
- Comprehensive, local data for PEI is rarely obtained
- Information can help prioritize the health needs of youth in the province
- Schools, school boards, and provincial health and education departments have timely access to data that supports action and addresses identified needs
- Ability to identify contributing factors to healthy lifestyle behaviours and choices
